Assignment 3
Closed Grisaille Master Copy
Required Supplies:
- Oil-primed linen canvas panel
- One color (Ivory Black, or a premix of Ivory Black and Burnt Sienna is recommended)
- Titanium White
- Full range of brushes
- Paint thinner (optional)
- Painting medium (optional)
Utilizing the knowledge gained from Assignments 1 and 2, review Concepts of Painting: Closed Grisaille Underpainting and create a closed grisaille painting of a master copy. Work on linen or a prepared panel (determined by analyzing the substrate of the original painting), and select either Ivory Black or a premixed combination of Ivory Black and Burnt Sienna to create a warm black. Using a variety of brushes (determined by analyzing the original painting and comparing it to your brushstroke chart), paint application should directly mimic the master painting selected. Those skilled in all concepts of drawing (shape, value, and edge) should feel free to opt for any subject; those who have not yet mastered drawing should limit subject to still life and landscape. The success of the assignment should be evaluated by the successful mimicking of the brushwork of the original painting. Values should be the same as the original painting (in later assignments, the values would be modified if the grisaille were to be used as an underpainting for glazing).
