CPC202

Work from a live model (hire a model or attend open studios; avoid using a photograph) to complete a series of anatomy studies before commencing traditional figure painting procedures. This allows for many opportunities to practice the simplification of the human figure and to develop a strong ability to block in a painting for longer poses. Most work done should be alla prima. After anatomy studies, complete the three types of block-ins for the whole figure: an open grisaille, a closed grisaille, and a full color block-in. Conclude with an extended pose and further build upon a block-in, using the process of the master being studied as a guide for each step. Note that each of the anatomy demonstrations represent a different working process. Select the approach most analogous to the master artist being studied, and apply that process to all anatomy studies.

OBJECTIVE: DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING/COMPETENCY IN THE FOLLOWING:

  • Ability to simplify shapes and values of a figure into a full-color, open or closed grisaille underpainting.
  • Use of accurate and believable proportions in a figure painting block-in.
  • Understanding of correct paint application to achieve the desired underpainting.
  • Ability to render various anatomical structures in an alla prima study.
