CPC301

Use acquired skills to create a believable, well-composed portrait in color. First begin with alla prima studies of the various features, then proceed to a longer extended pose. Conclude the course with the completion of an alla prima portrait.

OBJECTIVE: DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING/COMPETENCY IN THE FOLLOWING:

 

  • Ability to demonstrate believability of shape, value, edge, and color without awkward appearance.
  • Understanding of the anatomy of light and color on a head.
  • Understanding of paint application to create texture or focal points, if applicable.
  • Ability to utilize and demonstrate proper paint layering techniques (fat over lean).
  • Ability to utilize any learned techniques to produce a portrait bearing a likeness to the model.

Assignment 1
Study of an Eye

Complete an alla prima study of an eye using knowledge gained from previous assignments. A limited color palette should be employed.

Assignment 2
Study of a Nose

Complete an alla prima study of a nose using knowledge gained from previous assignments. A limited color palette should be employed.

Assignment 3
Study of a Mouth

Complete an alla prima study of a mouth using knowledge gained from previous assignments. A limited color palette should be employed.

Assignment 4
Study of an Ear

Complete an alla prima study of an ear using knowledge gained from previous assignments. A limited color palette should be employed.

Assignment 5
Extended Portrait

Spend as long as necessary to paint a portrait to completion. Keep examples of portraits painted by the master on hand to refer to for composition, color, and paint application. 

Assignment 6
Alla Prima Portrait

Conclude CPC301 by completing an alla prima portrait, using any layers necessary to create a successful painting.
